Little Men, Big Nicknames And An Action Fight In Store

This matchup reads like a monster flic: "The Raging Bull Meets King Kong." It won’t be a monster flic, but it may be one helluva fight. "The Raging Bull" Vic Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KOs) may not have one of the most original nicknames in the business. Fans of Jake LaMotta would actually be pissed.

But no one can deny that he is one of boxing’s most exciting fighters and is sure to unleash his full arsenal when he tries to lift Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko’s (26-1, 22 KOs) IBF bantamweight title this Saturday.

Since the lone defeat of his career, a crushing knockout loss at the very skillful hands of Nonito Donaire (21-1, 14 KOs) almost two years ago, the Raging Bull has been on a rampage. He’s moved up from flyweight to unify the super flyweight titles, capped off by a scintillating destruction of the ultra-skilled Christian Mijares. His power and resume will be unlike anything Agbeko has ever seen.

King Kong is no pushover, unless your name is Faye Wray, Jessica Lange or Naomi Watts. Darchinyan may not have the same effect this trio had but he’ll surely leave his mark. Look for him to drop his own brand of fireworks a week after Independence Day in the U.S. Although Agbeko has shown a very sturdy chin, good power and is the naturally bigger man, I feel that the competition gulf between the two men is extremely wide. This will spell doom for him.

Unlike King Kong the movie, the ultimate confrontation in this fight will take place in Sunrise, Florida rather than at the top of the Empire State Building. But just like the movie, King Kong will fall. Look for Vic Darchinyan to claim another title in a new division via 8th round knockout.

I’m surprised there is no filipino’s dissing Darchinyan. Vic is on a real roll at the moment. Having said that it’s hard to underestimate the fighting spirit of these Ghanian warriors. I still remember the day I was at Princess Park in Melbourne 1st March 1992 when Nelson was a prohibitive underdog and handed Fenech his ass on a platter. It haunts me with Ghanians. Anyway I’m getting away from the subject, I feel this will be very tight and I wouldn’t be surprised if BOTH men visit the canvas, I’ll go for Darchinyan but I’m not putting any hard earned on it!

I am still haunted by Vic’s post-fight interview after getting blasted by Donaire. He said he wasn’t hurt. I said I was the President of the United States. lol That being said, I hear you, but going back to that Nelson-Fenech fight, it was clear that many people over-estimated their draw (they rescinded Nelson’s victory the same day of the fighgt after he was headed to the locker room, right?). It was later reported that Nelson suffered from Malaria in that first fight. When he was healthy, he destroyed Fenech. I don’t think Agbeko is any Nelson. Look for Vic to continue blasting away, but you may be right about both men getting hurt.

Have you guys seen Agbeko’s record? Its awful! His whole career has been against 0-1-0 type fighters. I think Vic can stop him early but am going for a KO7

CK, I’ve seen him fight a few times, and he looks pretty solid BUT I feel you on the competition. To his defense though, not many folks can match Vic’s.

It’s a waste of time for champions to deal with armatures especially in a public arena. Joseph King Kong Agbeko is and has been the champion undisputed. I know without any doubt that the champion has the requisite mindset to fight Vic Dorchenyan come Saturday to disgracefully relegate Vic to reconsider his occupation as a boxer. Trust me that this bout will NOT travel to the 10th round in favor of the King Kong. As a proud Ghanaian, i know my people and their pugilistic abilities to pull through difficult moments. Good luck King Kong.

Joel, thanks for joining us. You sound pretty confident. You should go to Bodog and bet on it (from my site of course). ha, ha More seriously, I am not so sure about Agbeko….sure he’s strong, but he appears fairly easy to hit and hasn’t fought nearly the competition that Darchinyan has. Hope to hear from you after the fight, win or lose!
